Inside the Torrone Archive (at the Court of Bologna) there is an ancient correspondence recounting a sentence that took place in 1630. The main protagonist of the episode is the young Maddalena, daughter of Alessandro dalla Cortellina, who lived in the rural area of Bologna.

According to her father's deposition, Maddalena was to be considered "married and wedded, but so far the marriage has not been consummated" with a young man named Segurino. This sentence serves as evidence of how, in 1630, the question of marriage was still ill-defined in the lower social classes. Continuing the discourse, we understand that Maddalena was only betrothed to Segurino, and the two had yet to make announcements in church. Segurino was, however, proving to be an excellent fiancé, as he had already given his betrothed "a pair of stockings, a pair of shoes and other things". 

However, the situation worsened one day when Maddalena was returning home from mass. The young woman, according to her words, was grabbed from behind "and Domenico kissed my right cheek or cheekbone near my ear and pulled me by the neck". The girl's words then describe all the fear she felt at that moment.

But the real reason the affair became public knowledge and was moved to a courtroom is because of the following. After Domenico da Magnani's "stolen kiss", Maddalena, having returned home, decided to tell her betrothed Segurino about the episode "and he began to despair about it, and never came home to see me again".

From the young woman's words, we can therefore understand that Segurino and his family cancelled their engagement to Maddalena and she, together with her father, filed a lawsuit against Domenico da Magnani to obtain compensation for the episode.

It cannot be excluded what was, in all probability, the cause of the unfortunate event. Maddalena's family was in fact poorer than Segurino's. The latter, wanting to obviate the problem of social status, hired Domenico to publicly kiss the young woman and thus bring about the cancellation of the marriage. 

The judge initially proposed that Domenico marry Maddalena as compensation, but her father refused. The sentence finally ended with a monetary compensation that increased the young woman's dowry.
