Between 1887 and 1891, London was shaken by a series of brutal murders of women that threw the Whitechapel district police into crisis. During the same period, this East End neighborhood saw a massive influx of immigrants, primarily Irish, leading to dire living conditions, widespread prostitution, and rampant crime. This starkly contrasted with the opulence of Victorian London's aristocratic salons - a city forever divided between grandeur and squalor.
Amid this underworld of crime, a figure emerged in 1888 who would become infamous: Jack the Ripper. His gruesome murders captured intense media attention, even in an already violent district. The discovery of the victims - young women all killed with the same modus operandi: a deep slash to the throat, removal of genital and internal organs, and facial mutilation - led authorities to issue an arrest warrant for an unknown serial killer.
A criminal profiler was even brought in to analyze Jack the Ripper’s psychological profile. Based on the victims’ injuries, experts concluded that the killer harbored both deep repulsion and a form of twisted attraction toward his victims - expressed through extreme violence rather than sexual assault. The geographical proximity of the murders led investigators to believe that the Ripper worked or lived in Whitechapel.
However, despite intensive investigations - including three letters allegedly sent by Jack himself to the authorities - his true identity was never uncovered. After five confirmed murders (though some speculate there were at least 30), the killings abruptly stopped, and the case was eventually closed without resolution.
One theory put forward by experts suggested that Jack the Ripper specifically targeted prostitutes, removing their reproductive organs as part of a twisted mission to "cleanse" Queen Victoria’s realm of immorality. However, this remains pure speculation and fails to explain the sheer brutality of the murders, which cemented Jack the Ripper’s reputation as one of history’s most bloodthirsty serial killers.
